Family violence/abuse is not the answer
We are told that violence is not the answer, yet our country goes to war when we have problemsâ⬠¦ It is the way people and families are, the answer to everything. I have chosen to explore the theme family violence/abuse is not the answer. This theme is shown in the short story ââ¬Å"boyâ⬠by Bruce Stewart, ââ¬Å"In the rubbish binâ⬠by Apirana Taylor, a true story by Michelle Manning ââ¬Å"its okâ⬠and Harry potter by J. K Rowling At the beginning of Boy, boy who is Maori he feels like he doesnââ¬â¢t belong in his culture ââ¬Å"im not a Maoriâ⬠he gets bullied at school and comes home crying. His Dad comes home and sees Boy crying he says to Boy ââ¬Å"Stop being a baby or Iââ¬â¢ll give you something to cry about ââ¬Å"This shows that the Boys dad is full of violence and threats. ââ¬Å"Stormed into the bedroom AGAIN and started hitting me with his razor strapâ⬠. By this saying in the story with the word ââ¬Å"Againâ⬠means this isnââ¬â¢t the first time or the last time Boy will see of that razor strap. At the end of the story boy finds his true place where he belongs from his motherââ¬â¢s death. He is in the hands of his motherââ¬â¢s family and I think thatââ¬â¢s the last time Boy would have seen of that razor strap. The short story ââ¬Å"in the rubbish bin ââ¬Å"it portrays the theme that violence/ Abuse is not the answer. More the mental side than the physical side. We see this in the character phillipa. Phillipa who gets mentally abused by her mum. Her poor upbringing causes phillipa to take a smelly trip to a rubbish tin. Imagine how many kids in New Zealand are exactly like her we have over 1,600 gaming machines and over 100 gaming tables and thatââ¬â¢s at Auckland sky tower alone. There are cases were we have parents leaving kids in cars on hot days just because the mum or dad want to go have a try on the machines and the tables it needs to stop . Why donââ¬â¢t the parents stop and think before they do, they should be thinking of their kidââ¬â¢s future and saving up on itemââ¬â¢s that they will have wanted when they donââ¬â¢t have the money. Maybe the government needs a wakeup call and instead of having the casino open 24 hours a day, seven days a week make it less so we donââ¬â¢t have more cases of them on the news of kids in hot cars and forgotten about. In the rubbish bin and boy have similar backgrounds just with a twist, Boys mother takes one hundred percent care of her child and Ruth shows no appreciation towards Phillipa. The dads in the story are both abusive Boys dad towards boy and Phillipas dad towards Ruth. The short story ââ¬Å"its okâ⬠also identifies the theme ââ¬Å"family violence is not the answerâ⬠matt has shown that he thinks that violence is the answer ââ¬Å"sharp hard slapsâ⬠, He was hitting her faceâ⬠,He was hurting her to much now ââ¬Å" shows that Matt is very abusive and he wonââ¬â¢t stop anytime soon. Matt has his wife begging him to stop ââ¬Å"she was begging now ââ¬Å"stop it! Stop it! ââ¬

Divorce Rates in America
Americaââ¬â¢s Divorce Rates: Why Are They So High? The sanctity of marriage is a tradition that has been entered by generations over the past thousands of years. In the United States alone, 2,200,000 people choose to enter the lifetime commitment of marriage every year. Yet, less than half of that population is expected to keep that commitment. In a 1999 Rutgers University study, it is said that only 38 percent of Americans consider themselves happy in their married state, which has decreased from 53 percent 25 years ago. With the current, alarming statistic of over half of marriages resulting in divorce, there is much reason to take notice of how these numbers got so high. Although I personally have not grown up in a divorced household, I sought to understand why so many other people have, and in turn possibly gain knowledge to avoid becoming a part of the divorced population as well. In Steven Nockââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Divorce Problem,â⬠he encloses the important point that ââ¬Å"Divorce is not the problem, but rather a symptom of the problemâ⬠(1 Nock). With varying symptoms such as the feminist movement in the 1960s, an increase in financial dependence, increased career mobility, and the overall changed perception of marriage, the divorce rates have increased rapidly since the 1960s and deserve further explanation. The overall family structure has been challenged, and fault lines in American families have widened since the 1960s and the 1970s, which is when the divorce rate doubled. In the magazine article, ââ¬Å"The Pursuit of Autonomy,â⬠Alan Wolfe states that ââ¬Å"the family is no longer a haven; all too often a center of dysfunction, it has become one with the heartless world that surrounds it. â⬠While this statement may be a slight exaggeration of the family perception, reasons remain for the rapid increase of 30 percent in the divorce rate since the 1960s. Discussed in Barbara LeBayââ¬â¢s article, â⬠Å"American Families Are Drifting Apart,â⬠there are supposedly four main societal changes that occurred in the 1960s, which have greatly impacted todayââ¬â¢s traditional family structures in America.Such societal changes include the sexual revolution, women's liberation movement, states' relaxation of divorce laws, and mobility of American families and are said to be responsible for many of our family alienations. During this time frame, societyââ¬â¢s youth fled from the confines of family, while other family members sought to keep them close and as a result, it is said that there were most likely more problematic issues between children and parents during the 1960s and early 1970s than ever before.More importantly, the women's liberation movement in the workplace played a large role in changing the values and perceptions of family structure in America. Before this time, men were the assumed leader of each household and were given the largest responsibility of advancing i n their careers to make a living, while women were for the most part financially dependent upon them. However, starting in the 1960s women with a college degree could live independently and establish a life for themselves. There was a new recognition in society that civil rights meant equal rights for everyone, including women (243 Finsterbursch). Women sought sexual equality, which included a wider range of career opportunities and promotions that were once available only to men. By having this form of financial independence, women also had more of the freedom to break away from destructive or unhappy marriages. Although this movement is an important and productive one, it also impacted the traditional notions of marriage.Marriage had suddenly become a ââ¬Å"choice,â⬠rather than a ââ¬Å"necessity,â⬠and the entire concept of divorce became less of an issue. Another great change during this time period was the increase in mobility of families in which many family members were no longer living in the same household with one another. Men and women began to move to wherever they could advance in the corporate ladder in the shortest amount of time. Despite how far it was from where they grew up, college students took more jobs away from home, jeopardizing family unity.People needed to invest lots of time and energy to recreate their lives without the support of their family with these relocations, and still today many are willing to sacrifice their family relationships in order to advance in their careers. Barbara Lebay makes the important point that strangely, the more financially independent people become, the more families scatter and grow apart and tolerance levels decrease as their financial means increase (1 Lebay). In relation to this observation, Joseph Ducanto makes a similar point about the financial effects of divorce on poverty, along with the idea that while fixing the divorce system will not eliminate the future of poverty, certain changes can help to bring the problem into an easier resolution. In the article, ââ¬Å"Divorce and Poverty are Often Synonymous,â⬠there is praise for the concept of prenuptial agreements due to the fact that in recent years, prenuptial agreements have been adopted by many states of the Uniform Premarital Agreement Act.The adoption of this Act is said to ââ¬Å"significantly strengthen the legal basis for acceptance and enforcement of these agreements within marital proceedingsâ⬠(90 Ducanto). In todayââ¬â¢s society, the need and importance of prenuptial agreements signifies our priority of finances being a common theme to marriage termination. Often times, who makes the money in the family and just how much can determine whether a marriage will stay together or not, an issue that was not common before the 1960s. The accumulation of marriage and divorce laws over the years are also said to have affected our increasing divorce rates.Since the 1970ââ¬â¢s, all states have had access to what are called ââ¬Å"no-fault divorces,â⬠with the only real restriction being a waiting time limit of a few months to a year. The motivation for this concept came from the movement of people who felt this would benefit women and children who were stuck in verbally or physically abusive marriages. However, in Steven Nockââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s Divorce Problem,â⬠he discusses that many believe that the facility of this idea has also created somewhat of a ââ¬Å"divorce cultureâ⬠to the United States in which the traditional sanctions of marriage are no longer respected as much.Others also disapprove of the no-fault divorce saying that it often leaves women dependent, harms the interest of the children, and deteriorates the general social welfare (1 Nock). Although I personally have not grown up in a divorced household, I sought to understand why so many other people have, and in turn possibly gain knowledge to avoid becoming a part of th e divorced population as well. With varying symptoms such as the feminist movement in the 1960s, an increase in financial dependence, increased career mobility, and the overall changed perception of marriage, the divorce rates have increased rapidly since the 1960s and 1970s. During this time, there came the beginning of what some would describe as a ââ¬Å"divorce cultureâ⬠for America in which divorce was not seen as such a serious matter, with even the electing our first divorced President of the United States, Ronald Regan.Although events and movements of this era such as womenââ¬â¢s empowerment in the workplace are very important to history, they have also impacted the traditional notions of marriage. Marriage has become a ââ¬Å"choice,â⬠rather than a ââ¬Å"necessity,â⬠and the entire concept of divorce is much less of an issue. This new attitude on divorce has clearly prevailed to current times and will hopefully correct itself throughout more changes in ev ents to our society. Nursing curricullum - Essay Example Despite there being a clear significance of the learning process to every personââ¬â¢s development, health, functioning, the well-being and health, debate about how learning takes place, the experiences that deem to hinder or facilitate learning, and the key elements that ensures learning becomes relatively vital has never ceased. Arguably, one such crucial elements pertains a learning theory. A learning theory is the coherent framework of some integrated principles and constructs that can be used for describing predicting or explaining how individuals learn. Education psychology has provided alternative theories alongside perspectives concerning how the process of learning takes place. The curriculum for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN's), has adopted a number of learning theories that have evidently been useful at boosting the training, as well as the learning processes of its staff (Fitzpatrick, & Whall, 2005).. ... They are more significant in influencing the pedagogical practice. More often than not, behaviourists tend to be of a view that all behaviour, no matter their complexity can easily be reduced to simple stimulus response association. In essence, behaviourists are emphasize on the measurable outcomes rather than imaginary thoughts and feelings (introspective processes). Ivan Pavlov, while conducting an experimental research with dogs, found out that dogs tend to salivate whenever the laboratory technician enters the room (McKenna, & Slevin, 2008). Research conducted over the same revealed that dogs had made the association between stimulus (food) and the technicians (neutral stimulus) thereby leading to the dogââ¬â¢s drooling response. This theory was termed as Pavlovian conditioning and was further developed by Watson who further demonstrated the classical conditioning among humans with the use of the young boys called Little Peter and Little Albert (McKenna & Slevin, 2008). Extend ing on this theory, Skinner used this theory to provide an explanation of the more complex forms of learning. Skinner believed that it was possible to utilize principles underpinning animal experimentation with children and infants. He went ahead coining the terminology Operant conditioning in explaining the influence negative and positive reinforcers have upon maintaining and shaping the behaviour of a child. The AACNs have adopted the Skinnerââ¬â¢s theory as used in reward and punishment systems used by teachers in shaping and maintaining the behaviour of pupils. Praise, star charts, positive feedback, alongside circle time are crucial examples of the commonly used positive reinforcers, while

Critical Analysis of The Abortion by Alice Walker Essay
Critical Analysis of The Abortion by Alice Walker - Essay Example He then throws the dice back at her by saying, ââ¬Å"well, think about itâ⬠. For Imani, abortion is not an easy process to undergo, having lost most of her blood during her school days. Clarence tells her to think about what she wants to do with the baby; and the writer makes a mental statement that ââ¬Å"it was all she did think aboutâ⬠. The man is seen as preoccupied with his job, even going to an extent of performing family duties, for instance, dropping his wife at the airport, with his boss by his side. Abortion is always known to be an issue when procured out of marriage, but this family carries its struggles to their home as Imani is tired of having more children since she needs to focus on her career. She cannot bear another child because her husband is not supporting her in handling family chores. It is told in the story that despite her weakness due to haemorrhage, she goes out of her comfort zones and struggles to bathe her child. Alice Walker is an award winni ng author, known for telling stories of human experiences in addressing issues of gender equality and social injustices. Thesis statement Having an unwanted pregnancy is a painful experience, and the woman bears the greatest responsibility in making decisions on termination or giving birth. In defending this thesis statement according to the story, the writer gives a lot of pointers to show how the man is a passive participant in this process. Clarence (Imaniââ¬â¢s husband) is a young man, dedicated to the service of his boss who eats up most of his family time as he is the legal advisor to the mayor. ââ¬Å"Clarence was dedicated to the mayor, and believed his success would mean security and advancement for all of themâ⬠. This statement shows the egocentric nature of these men in Imaniââ¬â¢s life. Clarence is preoccupied with his career advancement concerns to such an extent that he mixes office duties with private life. Despite the writer exposing him as a responsible m an who works hard to fend for the family, this is not enough to keep a united home. Their matrimonial bed ââ¬Å"is king sized with a forbidding ridge in the middle (Walker, p. 210).â⬠The mayor is just a depiction of the mean nature of men; he does not notice Imaniââ¬â¢s presence when they are in the dining table. He gives full concentration to Clarence, not even having a quick glance at his wife when she makes a point. Gender defined roles is brought to the fore since the mayor only gives her props when he acknowledges her meals and hairdo. This means that a womanââ¬â¢s role is restricted to the kitchen and within the domestic domains. On her abortion trip to New York, the mayor has scheduled a working lunch with her husband. This is so insensitive since the man is supposed to provide emotional support to the partner during such delicate times. In the car to the airport, they engage in talks about municipal funds; this could have provided the best opportunity for Claren ce to say last words with his wife as he is not accompanying her to New York. At the lounge, he tells her ââ¬Å"take care of yourselfâ⬠, as he walks away to a waiting car (Walker, p. 212). As she heads to take her flight, she makes a mental statement analysing what Clarence had just said: ââ¬Å"taking care of myself, is what I have to doâ⬠. She had expected her husband to accompany her for the trip but it seems his mind was set on drafting municipality

Managing Projects College Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Managing Projects College - Essay Example Calculation of WACC is not a simple task as many would think, this is because the only part which is simple is calculation of the debt a firm has, these debt include the bank loan and other borrowing, however this is usually the beginning of the hard task since it known that the equity finance is usually more expensive than cost debt finance, this is due to the fact that equity finance has complex computation of the risk premium making computation of WACC complex. This computation of WACC is made more complex when determining which debts or equity should be used to increase the returns on capital of the share holders. The inclusion of corporate tax- rate in this computation adds more trouble while calculating WACC in view of the fact that interest payment is taxable. From the above facts, I would not agree with the statement that calculation of the WACC is the easiest thing in the world because even though the formulae appears simple it cannot be interpreted in lay mans language, e.g. the total finance includes all the trade credits and current liabilities which are reflected in the balance sheet of a company, but for the accountants who calculate the investments alternatives and evaluate critically the account of a company whose objective is to maximize the investment returns, it may not be a hard thing. But I would conclude by disagreeing with the statement. Q2. Determining the replacement of maximus limited machinery using equivalent annual cost: year capital investment running cost scrap value gross value present value factor present value 1 9999 0 9999 9999 1 9999 0 2985 5040 2055 0.909091 1868.182 present value 11867.18 2 9999 0 9999 9999 1 9999 0 4015 3100 -915 0.909091 -831.818 0 4015 3100 -915 0.826446 -756.198 present value 8410.983 3 9999 0 9999 9999 1 9999 0 8970 1080 -7890 0.909091 -7172.73 0 8970 1080 -7890 0.826446 -6520.66 0 8970 1080 -7890 0.751315 -5927.87 present value -9622.26 From the above calculations the machines should be replaced on the third year, this is because the net present value of the machine in the third year is negative (-9622.26) as compared to the other years where the net present value is positive. A negative present value means that the machine has negative value. This is a good measure of investment because it considers the time value of money and particularly useful for selection of a mutually exclusive investment and instrumental in achieving the objective of financial management, however one major factor that needs to be considered while selecting the better investment project is that, this is an absolute measure in that it favors the investment with higher NPV but it is likely that this project has a higher investment cost therefore, its doesn't give best results. Another factor to be considered is the whether the machines have different lives. 3. MARKET EFFICIENCY AND SHAREHOLDER WEALTH MAXIMISATION ARE TWO SIDE OF THE SAME COIN. Market efficiencies is defined as a market in which all the participants have all the information in the market, that is, all buyer and seller have know the prices concerning all the products whereas
